The New General Motors may have opted out of the 25-year-old NUMMI venture with Toyota, but now the Japanese automaker is reported to be considering an offer of the Prius, according to two Bloomberg sources.
In 2008, GM said the NUMMI plant's production included 149,000 Corollas, 122,000 Tacomas, and 71,000 Vibes.
"Our hope was for the 50/50 joint venture to continue," said a Toyota spokesman. "We will consider alternatives by taking into account various factors."
Offering the Prius to GM is apparently one of those alternatives being discussed at a meeting between the two companies' chief executives, if you believe Bloomberg's sources.
"A meeting of the executives is also not under consideration," said a Toyota spokesman.
Whatever the truth, a GM-badged Prius would give the company increased green credibility, serving as a less expensive environmentally friendly car below the Chevrolet Volt. Vibe production at the Fremont, California plant is scheduled to end this summer.
